The Furor Over Ferraro
03/13/2008

If I hear one more talking head Democrat begin their reaction to Geraldine Ferraro’s remarks on Obama with “Look, I respect Geraldine Ferraro, but...” I think I’ll start clawing the television screen to try to shut them up.  I have no respect for Geraldine Ferraro.

First of all, I don’t believe Ferraro is a racist for one second, but her comments certainly were.  When Ferraro says that Obama wouldn’t be where he is if he weren’t black, that’s racist.  If she doesn’t understand that, there’s nothing I can write in this blog that will bring her to that sad realization.  Furthermore, for Ferraro to try to mitigate her remarks by claiming that she was only chosen as Mondale’s running mate in ‘84 because she’s a woman is patently sexist.  It is truly remarkable to me that Geraldine Ferraro apparently believes that a person’s skin color or possession of a vagina should trump other qualifications for elected office such as hopefulness, temperance and judgment.

Which brings me to the Clintons.  When the Democratic campaign whittled down to Clinton and Obama, I was probably the last person in the world who thought that the contest between these two would devolve into one of race.  Apparently, Bill and Hillary had other ideas.  From Bill’s comments belittling Obama’s win in South Carolina to Hillary’s flip remark on “60 Minutes” that - as far as she knows - Obama isn’t a Muslim show just how low these two will go to win.

Look, we all know that Barack Obama is black, okay?  I think we can see that every time we see his face.  The Clintons don’t have to imply it, whisper it, blast email it or even beat me over the head with it.  I really and truly get it.

So, Geraldine Ferraro can take her bitter attitude with her and give paid speeches to Hillary supporters from now till Jesus comes back for all I care.  I’m so over her and I’m starting to feel a little like Keith last night:

I’m a Democrat - always have been, always will be.  I said earlier this year that I would gladly vote for either Hillary or Obama in the general election.  No more.  If Hillary Clinton is the nominee of my party, I’m staying home in November.
